Having a cause greater than yourself
'...Is there not a cause?' 1 Samuel 17:29
What makes you get out of bed first thing? The sound of your alarm? Your Mum poking you in the ribs with a mop handle? The glorious aroma of your own morning breath? Or is it purpose? Does your day, and indeed, does your life have a purpose to it that springs you into action? David sprung into action because he saw God's people cowering away from Goliath. He saw the need for action. He saw a cause greater than himself. He saw purpose.
Research among people who live to be over 100 shows that the secret to long life isn't healthy diets, miracle drugs or strenuous exercise, but purpose. People with a reason to get out of bed in the morning live longer.
Paul writes: 'For to me to live is Christ...' (Philippians 1:21 NKJV). For Paul, that was his purpose. Should that be yours? God made you for a mission. Have you discovered it yet? At age twelve Jesus said, '...I must be about my Father's business?' (Luke 2:49 NKJV). Twenty-one years later, dying on the cross, He announced, '..."It is finished"...' (John 19:30 NKJV). The biggest mission in history was finished in two decades because Jesus never strayed from His purpose.
So ask God to reveal to you His purpose for your life. Until you find it you haven't lived, and until you fulfil it you're not ready to die.
