Carpe Diem

'...thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live.' 1 Thessalonians 5:18

'Carpe diem', that's Latin for 'seize the day'. It means live for today, not tomorrow. We can often spend today looking forward to tomorrow. We decide we don't like the now, so daydream about the later. We find ourselves saying things like: 'I can't wait till the weekend', or 'things will be so great when I finally leave school.' Or 'once I get my license, my life will be perfect!'

We focus on the future. If we always live like this - thinking mainly about tomorrow - we'll never be satisfied, because tomorrow never comes does it?

When things go wrong, we often look ahead to better days; try to avoid what's happening now. There's a problem with this futuristic obsession: It shields us from what really is (reality) by filling our minds with what might be (fantasy). The result is sad; we miss out on life, because we never stop to think about what's happening now!

God doesn't want you to miss out, which is why he says, Give thanks all the time, 'no matter what is happening'. When you do this you recognise that every moment of every day He is there with you. Nothing is outside His understanding.

When life is sad or difficult, taking time to thank God you realise He is there protecting you, loving you, encouraging you, supporting you. If you're always looking ahead you'll miss out on knowing Him. So seize the day; give thanks!
