Amazing grace
'To me...grace was given, to preach...the unfathomable riches of Christ.' Ephesians 3:8
If its not, '-by-ya' it's 'Amazing Grace'. Anyone who can barely tune a guitar and strum a chord has probably tackled it. A song so famous, it must've just always existed, right? It fell from the sky one day and landed on a worship leader's fretboard, right? Actually, no. John Newton showed no early signs for musical masterpieces.
A rough sailor, in trouble with law, at odds with authority, and always the first to diss a Christian, he cared only for himself. One night, however, he woke to find his PJ's soaked with salt water, his boat was sinking fast, his life moments from ending, when he turned to the Lord, asking for forgiveness and new life in Christ.
The rest is musical history. The song Newton wrote about this episode in his life went a little like this: 'Amazing grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see. Through many dangers, toils and snares I have already come; 'tis grace hath brought me safe thus far and grace will lead me home.' How amazing is grace! How amazing is Jesus! Maybe, you feel a little like John, perhaps circumstances are drowning you at this moment. Take a note from Newton, remember, God's amazing grace is just a prayer away from rescuing you.
