A Word to young leaders (2)
'Joshua ordered the officers of the people.' JOSHUA 1:10
There's more wisdom for us today in this story about the people of Israel entering the Promised Land. God says to Israel's leaders: 'Help your brothers' (Joshua 1:14 NIV). In this statement we see an early example of what we now know from the life of Jesus to be a lifestyle of serving. At the end of every day we should each ask ourselves, 'Who got what out of the choices I made today?' If the answer is 'I got lots, God got a bit and everybody else got zip' then you aren't on the path to leadership in the kingdom of God. Jesus put it like this, 'If you want to be great, you must be the servant of all the others' (Mark 10:43 CEV).
Leadership boffin John Maxwell writes, '...live by these four simple words: add value to others. That philosophy will take you far. All talented people have a choice to make: to do their own thing and get all the credit or do the team thing and share it.
My observation is that not only do talented people accomplish more when working with others but they are also more fulfilled than those who go it alone.' So here's the deal: you're only qualified to enjoy the perks of leadership when you're willing to embrace the principles of leadership, which means putting other people first.
