Who's The Father?
''The virgin will ... give birth to a son...'' Matthew 1:23
The Pharisees were fuming: 'This country bumpkin preacher accuses us of not knowing who our father is! People in glasshouses, Jesus!' They threw the illegitimacy card smack in Jesus' face: 'We were not born of fornication... Unlike some! Tell us again, who your father was? Even Joseph the carpenter used to get tongue-tied when trying to explain.
We know about your family's dirty secrets. We can see with our own eyes there's no family resemblance whatsoever.' Jesus must have grown up with the tittle-tattle. The jibes. The pointing fingers. Of all the entrances in the universe, why had God insisted His Son be born to an unwed teenage Jewish girl?
No wonder people had thought he was the result of a one night stand. Hadn't even his own adopted dad thought the same thing at first? Jesus had to be human in order to die, and he had to be God in order to save. Being born of an earthly mother qualified him to be human. Being conceived by a heavenly Father qualified him to be God.
Jesus broke the genetic cycle of sin before he was born. The angels announced 'Immanuel' which means 'God is with us'. How ironic then that the 'religious' set miss out on God with them. Two millennia ago a virgin gave birth to a son; to a Saviour. Mary knew it. Joseph grasped it. Luke, a medical doctor, wrote about it. God is with you - don't miss it!
