When Nobody's Looking
''Glancing this way and that and seeing no one...' ' Exodus 2:12
Nice work, Moses. He was asking for it, exploiting the poor like that, striking the guy like a dumb animal. Slavery is evil. Who wouldn't have brought down a large boulder on that Egyptian's skull?
One question though: If what you did was right, why are you now trying to cover it up? Why are you dragging a bloodied corpse down the back-streets of Cairo? Why are you now hiding his bludgeoned body six feet under? Why, Moses, why?
Ever done something wrong when nobody was watching? Late-night channel hopping and you land on planet porn? Downloading that album not yet out in the shops? Sneaking a cheeky brown note from your mum's purse? Nice work. Got away with that one. Nobody has seen me - so it doesn't count, right?
Except God of course. God sees everything. When we know we can get away with it, but we still choose not give in to temptation, God smiles. But what if the pull is too strong? After all we're only human.
That's when we need to get some accountability. Be answerable to someone wise and trustworthy. Let them know your struggles and ask them to support you. Avoid situations that are likely to lure you. Set a curfew on your viewing habits. Allow your accountability partner access to your smartphone.
Remember, 'No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face...' (1 Corinthians 10:13 TM).
