What Matters Most?
'I don't care what happens to me' Acts 20:24
Paul writes, 'I don't know what will happen to me ... I don't care ... as long as I finish the work that the Lord Jesus gave me to do.'
Paul wasn't wishing his life away, far from it, instead he had realised that he had taken hold of something much, much, more valuable: Jesus.
Paul may have seemed like a sold-out radical to people around him, maybe even suicidal, because of his insistence on walking into pretty nasty situations carrying Jesus' name and message high. He may have looked like he'd completely lost the plot, but he was working to a different set of priorities: "For me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain" (Phil 1:21).
What about that new mp3 player? That new phone? That new pair of jeans or accessory that you have to get your hands on as soon as you get chance? What about that boy or girl you've had your eye on? While these things can be harmless in themselves, sometimes they feel like they're all that life's about.
Paul didn't take any half-measures with distractions - he let that life die in him, instead living completely to do Jesus' work, and looking forward to an eternity with him when it was all over. What matters most to you?
