Wedding Bells (3)
'Marriage should be honoured by all' Hebrews 13:9
If Christianity would just let go of its hang-ups about sex, people wouldn't be so put off, right? We've ditched the church organ for the electric guitar, so why not click the refresh button on our attitudes to sex too? Why won't the church give us the green light to put it about a bit? The answer is God.
Sex and God: the two are connected. God made us and God made sex. And because we are spirit and God is spirit, there is a lot more happening in the conjugal bed than grunts and groans. Something spiritual is going on. And if God carefully designed the act of intimacy, doesn't it follow that He would know when to and when not to use it?
First Corinthians 6 says this, 'There's more to sex than mere skin on skin. Sex is as much spiritual mystery as physical fact; as written in scripture, "the two become one". Since we want to become spiritually one with the master, we must not pursue the kind of sex that avoids commitment and intimacy' (v. 16, TM).
Avoiding commitment avoids the beauty of relationships. We miss out on God if we're only interested in what we can get from Him; likewise we miss out on love if we're only interested in flesh on flesh. God draws a firm line on sex outside the commitment of marriage.
