Wedding Bells (1)
'Marriage should be honoured by all' Hebrews 13:9
'Don't Tell the Bride' is the kind of TV programme which X Factor rejects, desperate for five more minutes of fame, apply to go on. Cameras follow Nathan, the naive groom from Nantwich blowing twelve grand on a pair of cufflinks, leaving just enough budget for a wedding breakfast of Pot Noodles.
Meanwhile, the best man has made an origami wedding dress out of his enormous credit card bills, leaving the bride on the verge of calling the whole thing off. It certainly makes a fun hour's viewing seeing a father-of-the-bride landing repeated kicks to Nathan's top hat and tails, but you can't help thinking surely there's more to marriage than this!
There are more than 500 references to marriage in the Bible; clearly God thinks we need to treat the subject with a little more respect than a reality TV show. There aren't too many articles in the Old Testament about choosing the right song for your first dance, or whether your napkins should match the colour of your bridesmaids, but the Bible majors on the theme of relationships.
The Christian story is all about God winning back the relationship His people whipped away from Him. It's all about God restoring our messed-up relationships with each other, so whether we have a ring on our finger or not, fine-tuning our thoughts on marriage fine-tunes our thoughts on God.
