VALIANT WARRIORS

'All these soldiers... were both united and determined' 1 Chronicles 12:38

Read a bit about King David's soldiers in Chronicles 1 & 2, and the hulking warriors of 2006's blood & guts Spartan flick '300' might come to mind. Sword-toting, arrow-slinging, "wild in appearance, like lions, but as agile as gazelles racing across the hills.' (v8)

Or maybe Bane from the new Batman, all power and brute force - these guys were merciless killing machines! But read between the lines, and you'll see that underneath their leather hides and thick skins was something more than brute force.

What made David's warriors valiant? There are three basic things that made them the cream of the crop. They never gave up when the going got tough. They worked together as a team. And they always stayed faithful to their commander.

You're probably not enlisted in a regiment like David's, but the spirit of a valiant warrior - God's kind, anyway - goes deeper. Maybe you could learn a thing or two from these guys! Just like they trained to be persistent in hard times, so should we. 2 Timothy 2.3 says, 'Endure suffering... as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.'

In the same spirit of unity that they had, Philippians 2.2 asks us to '[agree] wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose.' And just as they are to stay close to their commander, Hebrews 3.1 talks straight to us: 'Holy brothers and sisters, God chose you... So keep thinking about Jesus... We believe in him.'

What Now? Think about your favourite hero - from a book, or a film. What is it that makes them so heroic? Can you see any of the characteristics from today's reading in their stories?
