THE INCOMPARABLE

''Even to your old age ... will I carry you...'' Isaiah 46:4

Isaiah was a prophet who spoke with zealous force, with both wit and the wisdom of years of experiencing the dirt of humanity first-hand. In Isaiah 46 he speaks on behalf of God, describing the stark difference between Babylon's idols (made-up human gods.

Idols can even be a picture of God that's not really Him) and the true, real God. 'So to whom will you compare me, the Incomparable? Can you picture me without reducing me? People with a lot of money hire craftsmen to make them gods. The artisan delivers the god, and they kneel and worship it!

They carry it around in holy parades, then take it home and put it on a shelf. And there it sits, day in and day out, a dependable god, always right where you put it. Say anything you want to it, it never talks back. Of course, it never does anything either!'

(Isaiah 46: 5-7 TM). God is alive, not dead like a plank of wood. He is the Incomparable, and our attempts to fully understand Him will always fall short.

More than that, He is real, He is powerful, and like no idol can do, He offers to carry us.. '...I've been carrying you on my back from the day you were born, and I'll keep on carrying you when you're old. I'll be there, bearing you when you're old and grey. I've done it and will keep on doing it, carrying you on my back, saving you' (v. 4 TM).

What now? We need to get rid of any idols in our own lives. Really ask yourself what they are (a good gauge is looking at where your time is most being spent) and bring them to God Ask Him to remove any you can't see.
