'Lazarus and his sisters invited Jesus to dinner' John 12:2
Pots and pans clattered in the kitchen. Martha couldn't believe that her sister was sat on her lazy behind doing nothing. Here she was with guests to be fed, tables to be set, drinks to be served. And there's Mary-dearest, sat all gooey-eyed at Jesus' feet.
Mary, on the other hand, couldn't believe the fuss her sister was making. If looks could kill, Martha would be up for triple homicide by now. Couldn't she understand that Jesus was here? Spreading butter and fish paste on sarnies could wait - but this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity; the Son of God was in full flow on their sofa!
Lazarus had no time for embarrassment. Sure, his sisters were creating a bit of an 'atmos', but things would turn out right. They always did. That was Lazarus' take on life ever since he was saved from the clutches of death. Nothing like a near-death experience to give you a fresh 'life's too short' outlook on things!
Which are you? Marthas tend to prioritise mission over the master. Marys need to realise that service is worship too. Lazaruses could do with checking in with the everyday world now and again. And yet, without Martha, practicalities are missed. Without Mary, passion in worship is lacking. Without Lazarus, we're deprived of amazing testimonies.
Truth is they all have their place at the table. And if they can see past the squabbles - as a unit they're one dynamic team not to be messed with.
