Take pride in your parents

'Honour your father and mother' Exodus 20:12

Yes, yes, yes - parents are old-fashioned, outdated, prehistoric dinosaurs and all of that. Dad was probably born wearing those sandals with socks. Mum, no doubt, stepped out of the womb with a dishcloth in hand, complaining about the state of the kitchen. But here's the thing: we're actually told to respect them.

The Bible doesn't have anything to say about demanding allowances from them every Friday, nor does Exodus say that we should, 'Honour thy father as a free taxi service'. But it does take respecting them pretty seriously (even if you disagree with them). Sure, there'll be times when you want to pull the old Alan Sugar routine on them: 'You're fired!' But have you any idea what a tough job they're doing? Think about it:

Mums know all about dental appointments and football matches after school; they make the meals that barely touch the sides of your mouth; they remove the gravy stains from your school uniform, they de-odour your underwear (and let's face it lads - that alone deserves some sort of medal from the Queen).

And then there's Dads...they're vaguely aware that there's some short people living in the house (joke - Dads do a great job too!) Today, how about taking the initiative for a change? Respect your folks by doing something for them without expecting anything back.
