Switching Flanks

'On the left hand... I cannot see Him.' Job 23:9

OK, so you may have a right foot that can thunder in a goal from fifty yards, but chances are, your left foot couldn't dribble saliva into the back of the net. The best wingers are trained to play on either flank in order to surprise their opponents.

And God? Well, He's the best two-footed winger around. God never fails to surprise us when He switches from flank to flank. Genesis 28 tells the story of God switching flank on Jacob. You see, Jacob was sent on a journey and was expecting to find a wife. Instead, God shows up on the journey revealing that there is more at stake than just finding the future Mrs Jacob. Through a dream, Jacob is shown what a vital part of the Bible's big picture he is.

With God, you can second guess what flank He's coming from, only to see Him running up the complete other way. Sometimes not knowing how God is going to show up can leave us feeling deserted. During his darkest hours, Job said, 'I go forward ... but He is not there; I go backward ... but I cannot perceive Him; on the left hand ... where He works ... I cannot see Him.'

Seeing God move in our lives reassures us in our faith, but when He's switched flanks on us, we need not worry that He's forgotten us - we can trust He's working us into the bigger picture.
