Sure thing
'Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life' Psalm 23:6
Let's cut today's verse into bite-size chunks: 'Surely goodness and mercy.' Life is an unsure thing. Just when you think everything is perfect, it has a funny habit of falling apart on you. Not so with God. Characterised by His goodness and mercy, God is life's only sure thing. 'God wraps you in goodness - beauty eternal. He renews your youth - you're always young in His presence' (Ps. 103:5).
We may run hot and cold with God; He, however is always hot on us: 'If we are unfaithful, He remains faithful...' (2 Tim. 2:13 NLT). Note, David doesn't say, 'Sometimes God has goodness and mercy... after all He is only human'. Nope. This verse says 'surely' - it's a dead cert; we can bank on God's goodness. 'Shall follow me.' That word 'follow' gives a picture of God's goodness tagging along wherever we go. If only folks knew - they'd be queuing up to add you as a friend; after all if you're leaving a trail of goodness, that means they get to enjoy it too.
'All the days of my life.' Think of the days ahead and what do you see? Hooking up with a God-beautiful babe? Jet-setting career? Getting alongside the helpless and hopeless? Whatever you're chasing, know that: 'It's in Christ we find out who we are and what we are living for' (Eph. 1:11 TM). Live all your days in thankfulness to God's goodness and mercy.
