Still waters
'He leads me beside the still waters' Psalm 23:2
Philip Yancey says, 'Faith means trusting in advance, what will only make sense in reverse.' If you fear the future, look back and see how God took care of you in the past. Walking with God isn't like visiting Crystal Ball Cathy at the fair. Even though God can see well into the future, He often doesn't let us in on it (and if He does, He usually only gives us glimpses rather than complete chapters).
Truth is, you were made to live for today. Anything that happens in the future will happen anyway, so why worry about tomorrow? Let Proverbs 3:5-7 massage those tense muscles with these words: 'Trust God from the bottom of your heart. Don't try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God's voice in everything you do, everywhere you go. He's the one who will keep you on track. Don't assume that you know it all. Run to God! Run from evil!' (TM)
Did you get that? 'Don't try to figure out everything on your own.' It's not joss-sticks and deep breathing relaxation exercises that lead us to still waters, it's God. 'Jesus said, "Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You're not in the driver's seat - I am' (Luke 9:23 TM). Do you trust Jesus at the wheel careering you over rough terrain ahead? 'He knows what he's doing, and he'll keep on doing it' (1 Pet. 4:19 TM).
