Shine a light

'It was not you who sent me here, but God.' Genesis 45:8

OK girls, are you ready for this? Do you want to know one of the universal mysteries that greets you every morning with awe and wonder? Can you handle the truth surrounding that ancient existential riddle - why is the toilet seat always wet in the morning?

Here goes: at precisely 2am every morning, your younger brother rises from his pit without opening his eyes, stands on a plug with his bare foot, and relieves his bladder of the two litres of Sunny D he swiped while your mum was watching Eastenders. Yes, all this without switching on the landing light.

You see without light our aim is off. And without the light God provides our aim is way off. 'Without good direction, people lose their way. The more wise counsel you follow, the better your chances' (Prov. 11:14). Sometimes, we're so impatient or untrusting that we'd rather fumble about in the dark of our own understanding than wait on God to turn on the lights.

Maybe we're scared, as God rarely gives us the full picture in one go. He knows that making us trust enables us to go deeper with Him. Keeping faith when the way isn't clear is tricky discipleship stuff, but here's good advice from one who's been there: 'God, I'm your servant. Help me understand what that means, the inner meaning of your instructions ... Break open your words. Let the light shine out. Let ordinary people see the meaning' (Ps. 119: 125, 130 TM).
