Send Revival, Start With Me (1)
'Revive us, and we will call upon Your name' Psalm 80:18
'Revival' is usually the word frothing out of the wild-eyed preacher's athletic mouth. But to you, it's one of those Christian jargon words that gets aired so often, you're too embarrassed to ask, 'What does it actually mean?'
The last two great revivals to hit the UK happened in the Hebrides and Wales. Both saw massive changes in culture. In the Hebrides, the whole of the island stopped what they were doing, putting down pints in pubs and tools down at work to go to church. People just felt compelled to meet God, whether they'd thought of themselves as Christians or not. The islands reported no more crime.
The revival in the Hebrides seemed to turn life the right way up. In Wales, crowds normally reserved for rugby matches were seen swarming into church. If you wanted to be baptised, you'd have to join the back of a queue which was 100,000 people long. Swear words were swapped for worship songs. The whole place felt so different that even animals no longer recognised their owners.
Revival is like God breathing fresh air into the lungs of the dead. Revival is God resuscitating our lives back in order.
Matt Redman wrote a powerful song called, 'Send revival, start with me'. The song nails it. If we want to see our city put back on its feet, we need to make sure we're on our feet first. Tomorrow we'll be looking at how.
