Seeing Sense
'When he came to his senses...' Luke 15:17
The young boy's stomach wanted to digest its own lining. It was days since he'd touch a scrap of food. And even that was leftover peelings he salvaged from the bins. How had it come to this?
Only 18 months ago he'd had the freshest of fruits, the finest of meats, wine by the bottle in his father's cellar. That was before the big fight with Dad. The one where he'd wished his own father dead. The one where he'd packed his bags and made off with the family credit card.
That was before the penthouse living, the gambling, the partying, the shopping. That was before the credit crunch - the one where the boy realised he was broke. The one where the boy was made homeless. As he rummaged through bins for a half eaten burger the lad came to his senses.
Home - that place with the warm fire crackling and the oven glowing was where he should be, not down and out, forgotten, on the cold, damp streets.
Jesus tells His world famous story of the rebel son who comes to his senses in Luke 15.
Isn't it about time you came to your senses and stopped trying to walk your own way? Isn't it about time you walked home to God your loving father? If you squint your eyes you can make out the sight of a devoted father running to you with arms opened in the distance.
