Saltshaker

'You are the salt of the earth' Matthew 5:13

You know those crisps where you add your own salt? Well have you ever tried munching before shaking the little blue sachet? They taste a bit lifeless and dull, don't they? It's the shake of the salt which kicks your taste-buds into party mode.

As Jesus freaks, we're asked to shake our salt to kick life into party mode. Jesus said, 'You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste ... it is not good for anything but to be thrown out'. It's the strength and quality of salt which brings the flavour out of food. If we're going to flavour this tired, dull life we need the strength and qualities of God: 'the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control' (Gal. 5:22).

So when you choose to love, you're shaking your salt. When you choose to wear a smile despite the tough stuff you're facing, you're shaking your salt. When you choose not to rise to Mr. Angry's threats, you're shaking your salt. When you choose to be patient with that doddering old ditherer at the bus-stop... well, you get the idea.

Love for God is the root; love for others is the fruit. We've all met religious types who can quote whole passages of the New King James, but are sadly lacking in love. They leave a taste like salt only good for throwing out.
