PUT YOUR FOOT DOWN (1)

''...Joshua...summoned all the men of Israel and said...'Put your feet on the necks of these kings...'' Joshua 10:24

After literally years of waiting, Joshua gets to live in the land he's been told about as a kid. It was going to be amazing. After years of waiting, he gets there but finds everyone's out to do him over!

Five kings with armies, each with their own weird name: Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem, Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish and Debir king of Eglon. They all combine against Joshua for one massive scrap, but God was on Joshua's side.

What follows is a rather unpleasant death for each of them. But what's in a name? The meaning of each king's name might be significant, by warning us about certain attitudes that can rob us of all that we can be. The first king's name is all about 'robbing our peace'. With no peace, doing the simplest thing is a nightmare.

The second warns us about 'being religious'.

The third means 'like a wild ***' - enough said?!

But also, this 'wildness' could refer to being isolated from other Christians.

The fourth's means 'shining'.

This isn't bad in itself but if you reckon you're God's gift but just lapping up the glory for yourself, you're just idolising yourself.

Finally: Debir, the last king: his warns us about bad mouthing other Christians. Whatever stinking attitude you've got: put your foot down and kill it! [Source: Five Kings, By Bill Burns, Faith Tabernacle, P. O. Box 1148, Kremmling, Colorado 80459 ft111.com/fivekings][JL1]

What now? Read the story for yourself in Joshua 10:16-27.
