POOR SO WE COULD BE RICH (1)
''Oh, the joys of those who are kind to the poor!...' ' Psalm 41:1
'Not being funny, right, but charity starts at home. The homeless don't need hand-outs, they need to get off their dirty backsides!'
You can hear all sorts of reasons and excuses why people choose not to help the poor. But God is very clear on what He thinks about it: 'When you happen on someone who's in trouble or needs help ... don't look the other way pretending you don't see him.
Don't keep a tight grip on your purse. No. Look at him, open your purse, lend whatever and as much as he needs. Don't count the cost. Don't listen to that selfish voice saying, "It's almost the seventh year, the year of All-Debts-Are-Cancelled," and turn aside and leave your needy neighbour in the lurch, refusing to help him. He'll call God's attention to you and your blatant sin' (Deuteronomy. 15:7 TM).
You might think, 'Oh, you know I'd love to help out but, well, they don't call me moneybags you know.' The Bible pushes us to look deeper: 'If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry' (Luke 3:11 NLT). There are always things we can do. What now?
Have a read of James 2:14-26 about faith and deeds. Think practically about how you might give regularly to the poor around you and make a commitment to do that with God.
