Playing Happy Families (2)

'I'm doing the very best I can ... at home' Psalm 101:2

So we're dealing with our feelings when it comes to living with a new step-parent or being part of what's sometimes called a 'blended family'. Having no previous history with this new adult in your life, you may be left wondering about new rules and whether you have to listen to your new step-parent. Hopefully, this new adult is someone else looking after your interests and welfare, so it's a good idea to afford them the same level of respect you'd offer your mum, dad or teacher.

You might worry about school holidays or Christmas time; who will you wake up to presents with? Any worry is a legitimate worry. You might want to talk it through with a parent alone or call a family meeting, whatever way best suits you.

Getting used to this other person watching TV shows that you never watch, taking extra-long baths when you want a shower, laughing at jokes which just aren't funny, can take some effort. It's not easy adapting to a new way of life and it definitely takes some getting used to sharing your mum or dad with this new person.

So don't bottle your feelings up or deliberately try and make life difficult. Let your mum or dad know what's going on with you. Understand yourself and each other, after all, 'It takes wisdom to build a house, and understanding to set it on a firm foundation' (Prov. 24:3 TM).
