Now That's A Staff!
'...Moses... became so tired ... Aaron and Hur ... stood on each side ... holding up his hands...' Exodus 17:11-12
In the battle of Israel verses the Amalekites, Moses ordered Joshua to choose the men he wanted to fight with, whilst he would stand far above, on top of the hill, with the staff of God in his hands. Think anyone complained, 'Bit lazy of Moses! "You all fight, I'll stand here with a stick!"' No, because this staff wasn't a mere walking stick. This was God's staff - the very same that parted the Red Sea, and got water out of a rock.
Having the staff of God in his hand showed the people of Israel that
1) Moses was the one chosen to lead Israel
2) It was the power of the Lord through Moses that would lead them to victory. As long as Moses held up the staff the Israelites would be stronger in battle.
But as Moses' arms got tired and the staff became lowered, the Amalekites gained advantage. So, 'Aaron and Hur found a stone for him to sit on. Then they stood on each side ... holding up his hands.'
Moses never planned that Aaron and Hur would join him on the hill, but God knew what Moses would need even if he didn't. God didn't just lead Israel into victory that day, He let Moses see his weakness and that there are times when we all need a helping hand. Even you!
