Meditate and Ruminate

'...Meditate on it day and night...' Joshua 1:8

'A ruminant is a mammal that digests plant-based food by initially softening it within the animal's first stomach, then regurgitating the semi-digested mass and chewing it again. This is called "ruminating"'. Thanks, Wikipedia!

If you're wondering why today we're talking about a rather unpleasant way of experiencing your lunch on repeat, it's all to do with ruminating - or meditating.

If we want to live spiritually healthy lives, it's important that we eat right and that means healthy portions of God's Word. Yet some bits of the Bible need to be chewed rather than swallowed whole, otherwise we suffer the equivalent of heartburn and indigestion.

No matter how busy life gets, we need to make sure we're making time to process, chew and meditate on God's Word so that it can take root and become part of you.

When Joshua replaced Moses as leader of the Israelites, God told him three times to 'Be strong and very courageous.' It would seem God was trying to make a point, and it wasn't to do with the gym.

God went on to explain where that strength and courage would come from: 'Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.'

God is saying that if we take His Word to our very core, then we have a role to play in our strength and success. You wouldn't swallow a piece of steak in one go. Chew on it, and keep chewing.
