Lord Of The Work
'Are you tired? Worn out?' Matthew 11:28
OK, so it's normally men with bad breath and degrees in growing nasal hair that spout this little gem, 'It's easy to get caught up in the work of the Lord, and miss out on the Lord of the work'.
But they're right. It's dead easy to get caught in the trap of doing - 'evangelising your mates', 'looking after kids in Sunday school', 'planning a youth outreach event' - and all the while missing out on just being.
While you're keeping your fingers crossed that God will smile down on all your good works, you're missing out on precious 'you and God' time.
God isn't a hobby, a side-project or a hard-graft. When we treat Him like that we're on the slippery slope to burnout. Without God's love to motivate us, needy people become just pains in the neck; Sunday school kids become a bit of free babysitting; youth outreach events become another hectic date in the diary.
Without God we lose the focus of why we do what we do. So how do we get our eye back on the ball? What is the antidote to burn out?
Matthew 11:28-30 has the answer, 'Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest.
Walk with me and work with me - watch how I do it ... I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live' (TM).
