Job

'You shall remember it as waters that pass away' Job 11:16

Job had an exemplary track record and still he was knocked down. Some fools live fast and loose with the rules and get what they deserve. Not Job: he got a large portion of undeserved suffering. He loses children through natural disasters. He loses everything he ever worked for through unforeseen circumstances. His marriage takes the strain of his faith. And to top it all: the doctor's results are just in, and I'm afraid it's not good news.

Job's once 'ad-man's dream life' is flushed down the toilet leaving him with lots of questions - questions he won't necessarily get answers for. Job is bewildered; Job is outraged; Job eventually protests to God. But still the pain eats away at his heart. And in the midst of his suffering his pain is hammered home daily by his 'friends'.

Ever notice how some people slow down to look at a car crash? Well that's Job's 'I told you so' mates. They show up hourly trying to identify and fix Job's problems; telling him to shape up and dance. They reduce following God to sure- fire formulas of 'do this and don't do that', 'think this and don't think that' and hey presto, life will be rosy again.

Zophar even goes as far as suggesting 'You'll forget your troubles; they'll be like old, faded photographs' (TM).

To Job's credit, he rejects all the glib answers and stays honest in the face of old clich?s. His persistence allows God, in time, to talk through the troubles.
