'Take off those grave clothes and let him go', Jesus said (11:44 NIV). Well, it wouldn't really be appropriate for Lazarus to go freaking out the good folk of Bethany looking like an extra from Michael Jackson's Thriller video, would it?
Lazarus, Mary and Martha's brother, had been dead for four days but Jesus had just raised him from the dead... 'What shall we dress him in now Mary? I mean, this is kind of a special day, our brother coming back to life!' 'I dunno Martha, but I've always hated that donkey poo-coloured tunic, let's leave that in the tomb shall we?'
It's easy to forget that before Jesus performed this amazing miracle in their lives, Mary and Martha were in full mourning. They were deeply hurt with grief. They both questioned Jesus' timing when He came to them. 'Lord,' Martha said to Jesus, 'if you had been here, my brother would not have died' (11:21).
Are you questioning God's timing or His involvement in a problem or circumstances you're dealing with? Maybe you think that God doesn't seem to be doing anything at all? Even through Martha's pain and confusion, she still didn't deny who Jesus was. She said: 'But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask' (11:22).
If you're having a 'What are you doing, God?' moment, remember God says, 'my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways ... As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways' (Isaiah 55:8-9). God's always got your best at heart.
