Good Grief!

'No one can serve two masters' Matthew 6:24

'Good grief' is an example of an oxymoron, a phrase containing words that contradict each other. Here are some more: Jumbo Shrimp, a Numb Feeling, Plastic Glasses, Fresh Frozen, a Fine Mess, a Working Vacation, Awfully Pretty, Bigger Half, Oddly Appropriate and Clearly Misunderstood.

There are also religious oxymorons, like Pure Evil but the most common is the term 'Lukewarm Christian'. These are two words that just don't go together.

In the book of Revelation 3:16 we read what Jesus said to the church in Laodicea: 'Because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold - I am about to spit you out of my mouth.' Jesus also said, 'No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.'

This doesn't mean that we have to be perfect before we can call ourselves a Christian (in fact 'perfect Christian' is an oxymoron too!) It just means that when we come to Christ, we must be willing to give Him our whole selves, not just part of ourselves. When Jesus comes into your life He can't become 'just one more thing'. Instead, He wants to take over.

As the apostle Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 5:17, 'If anyone is in Christ he is a new creation - the old has gone, the new has come!' Jesus lived to please God, not to impress people, and we need to follow that example.
