God Will Surprise You
'See, I am doing a new thing' Isaiah 43:19
We try and pin down God in the stony silence of a cathedral. Or we somehow think burning a candle will woo Him down from heaven; as if the real problem was He got lost in the dark! But sometimes God surprises us. Sometimes he turns up as a voice in a burning bush. Sometimes he shrinks down to a foetus in the womb of an unmarried Jewish girl. And sometimes He's found hanging from a tree in between two common criminals.
God will not be pinned down by our thin expectations. God shocks us in many guises, always announcing, 'See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up, do you not perceive it?' There's the challenge, right there - our perceptions.
We fail to recognise God at work. Ever been frustrated? You've bled prayers out of your forehead, you've had enough of God's promises to hang your hat on, and still seen nothing? Well try this for size: 'For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all who wait on Him' (Is. 30:18 NIV).
You might have your timetables sketched out, but the Lord says 'wait'. 'Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails' (Prov. 19:21 NIV). Time is on your side because the one who wears eternity around his wrist says 'wait'. Stay alert - tomorrow could be the new thing.
