Getting Along With Each Other (4)
'You must get along with each other' 1 Corinthians 1:10
Fixing something actually takes effort. When really we care about something, we have to think about the best way to do it properly! Uh-oh! Hello, brain ache! What can be even more work for the old noggin is when you're trying to fix something more precious than your Aunt Vera's favourite teapot. It's a lot harder to fix a friendship. And, cue migraine!
Fortunately, we're not alone. God has given us lots of help in the Bible on the issue of fixing broken relationships.
Here are some tip-top tips: 'If a fellow believer hurts you, go and tell them; work it out between the two of you' (Matt. 18:15 TM). 'A gentle response defuses anger, but a sharp tongue kindles a temper-fire' (Prov. 15:1 TM) meaning if you go in with a mindset to listen and respond in a calm way, it will help your temper! 'Use ... only helpful words ... so that what you say will do good to those who hear you (Eph. 4:29).
People's reactions to us can very often become easier to accept or understand when we resist hurtling straight in with how wrong they've been, and instead, hold back, listen and take on board how someone else feels about what we've said or done. So keep away from the 'Blame Game'. You're trying to move on and become friends again, remember, not to stay stuck in your own muddy pride puddle!
