Get into good habits (1)
'Everyone followed their old customs' 2 Kings 17:34
'Old customs' are a bit like habits. Things you get used to, and do without even realising it half the time. Here, the people were in bad habits - their 'customs' meant they weren't worshipping God properly, and weren't being obedient. They kept on feeding the habits every day by not changing things - and the longer you do that, the harder the habit is to break.
When a custom or habit is really deeply rooted, it can take you hitting rock-bottom before you even realise it's all gone wrong. So habits are really important things to get right - and what better time to start developing good habits and getting out of bad habits than right now??
Now, by 'bad habits', I'm not talking about things like biting your fingernails, ('It's a disgusting habit!' says your Gran) or interrupting a teacher in class ('Don't interrupt, it's rude!' says Sir), and by 'good habits' I don't mean always using a tissue when you sneeze ('Oh, do use a handkerchief, dear', says Mother) or saying 'please' and 'thank you' ('It doesn't cost anything does it?' says Uncle Bernard).
Don't get me wrong, those things all make sense - but even more important are the habits you get into when it comes to your relationship with God. It's the most important relationship of your life, so you need to get it right. So many of our habits and customs are set when we're young - so get them sorted now. How? We'll look at that tomorrow.
