Forever Young?
''...Let us go on ... and become mature...'' Hebrews 6:1
The cheek of those two brothers! Who do they think they are? Like Jesus wants to be sat like a spare part in between those pair bickering for eternity. If anyone's going to be sat at his right side in his glory it's going to be me. I'm the obvious choice. I'm laid back, probably the holiest, easy on the eye. And did I mention how humble I am? Mark 10:35-45 tells the story of disciples moaning.
James and John have clearly put everyone's back out by asking to be Jesus' wingmen in heaven. Never one to pussyfoot, Jesus tells them to grow up: '...You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant' (Mark 10:42, 43 NIV).
Growing up Jesus-style means reducing the swelling of your own head; humility is his way. Instead of clamouring for main stage like James and John, we should be turning the spotlight on others.
Instead of ripping that certain someone to pieces, we should be encouraging them to keep going. Instead of being ready with our tuppence-worth of advice, we should be looking to learn from others. 'Don't call attention to yourself; let others do that for you' (Proverbs 27:2 TM).
