Yo' mama so stupid she went to an antique store and said 'what's new?' Yo' mama' so dumb she got run over by a parked car! Yo' mama's house so dirty before you walk outside you have to wipe yo' feet!
Ever seen those films where two people are going at it with the trash talk? Well, maybe we're not so well versed in Yo Mama jokes, but we can still be too quick with the trash talk. We don't want to seem small so we fire a rapid sarcastic comment back to cut the other person down to size.
Peter wants us to try a new culture, swapping the trash talk for prayer talk. 'Never return ... insult for insult ... pray ... for their welfare, happiness, and protection ... that you may ... inherit a blessing [from God]... Keep [your] tongue ... from evil' (vv. 9,10 AMP).
Imagine Peter's trash talk: Yo' mama so poor I'm gonna feed and clothe her! Yo' mama so dumb I'm gonna pray for wisdom for her! Yo' mama so dirty the blood of Jesus is gonna wash her white as snow!
Okay. So maybe that kind of talk won't catch on. But here's the challenge, why not look for the best in people, not the worst? The beauty. Not the ugliness. 'Earn a reputation for living well in God's eyes, and the eyes of the people' (Proverbs 3:4 TM).
