FLOUR POWER
''There's poison in this stew!'' 2 Kings 4:40
There's nothing like a bit of outdoor cooking. Trees all around, fire crackling away and a nice bit of stew for the youth group. Ray Mears would be so proud! Now all it needs are a few 'herbes de provence'... there we go ... give it a stir and 'voila', a beautiful homemade stew a la Elijah!
So, what do you think, chaps? Impressed? Oi! Don't spit it out, it took me ages to make that! What do ya mean it's rancid? Errm... hang about... I'll... add some... some... (Eureka!) I'll add some flour! And it worked!
This was how Elijah dealt with the problem of a poisonous stew. Read it for yourself in 2 Kings 4. By adding flour, it miraculously took away the effect of the poison. God's Word is like flour, because flour is the main ingredient in our number one staple: bread!
Jesus said, 'I am the Bread of Life' (John 6:48 NLT) A real man, Jesus Christ Himself! Jesus can help us from becoming spiritually ill when we find ourselves in poisonous situations.
Don't let disappointments make you cynical. Go to the Word! Starting to feel the snake of resentment wrapping round your heart? Go to the Word!
Wound up in a mess which wasn't your making? Go to the Word!
And once you've added the Bread of Life, make sure you add seasoning too! 'Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone' (Colossians 4:6 NIV).
What now? Read 2 Kings 4:38-41. If you struggle to read the Bible, find a version you can understand. You could download an app for your smart phone like YouVersion so you've always got God's Word with you.
