Faith and Fantasy (2)
'...They speak a vision of their own heart, not from the mouth of the Lord' Jeremiah 23:16
Jesus said, 'Ask, and it will be given to you...' (Matthew 7:7 NKJ). 'Fantastic!' says your imagination, 'I'll have a Porsche 911, a big mansion, a pony in pink and a ... umm, a ...' Whoa there, Nelly! Before you finish off your shopping list, check the small print! It has to be in line with God's will (1 John 5:14 NIV).
Joseph was a young chap of seventeen with a richly ornamented robe (not necessarily Technicolor) who was a bit of a dreamer, and his dreams came true.
Read the story for yourself in Genesis 37 if you don't think the musical does it justice. The main points of his story were: God gave him some dreams indicating he'd be a big shot, but the next few years entailed piles of disappointment, a dollop of false accusations, a slice of imprisonment and a helping of more dreams. The conclusion to the story is that his dreams actually did come true. But those dreams probably came true in a different way to how he thought they would when he first had those dreams of greatness.
During that time, God worked his circumstances out so that he became humble and merciful, not arrogant and conceited. God cares more about good character than he does about gifting and talents. Rather than worrying about things out of your control in fantasyland, base what you do on your strengths and other factors within your control. When God gives you a dream, it will play to your strengths.
