Do The Maths
'His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life' 2 Peter 1:3
Have you been brushing up on your three R's lately? Reading (w)Riting and (a)Rithmetic? How are your mathematical skills? If they've grown a little dusty then 2 Peter 1 is your dust-buster.
In the space of one chapter you will learn some spiritual mathematics. In verses 5 -8 you discover 7 things you need to add to your life: 'For this reason make every effort to add to your faith, goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.
For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure they will keep you from becoming ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.' (Write down those 7 qualities so you don't forget them.) Then it's straight onto some subtraction.
'Those who fail to develop these virtues ... have already forgotten that God has cleansed them from their old life of sin.' We need to stop doing sinful things, subtract sin from our lives, stop going our own way and do life God's way.
The more we add those 7 qualities into our everyday lives the more we will subtract the sin. Every day, do the maths - your spiritual maths that is!
