Cue the Ruth reels (2)
'So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife' Ruth 4:13
Before the slushy scenes of kissing in the rain and holding hands on a beach, our Ruth movie must have the obligatory 'girly pampering' film sequence, where our leading lady turns from geek to goddess (usually by removing a pair of specs and shaking out the bun in her hair). Best bud Naomi tells Ruth to 'anoint herself' (Ruth 3:3). In OT times, this meant more than a splash of Chanel No. 5 and a liberal spray of St. Tropez.
Anointing was a sign of refreshment and renewal. Ruth wasn't getting ready for a hot date - she was getting prepared for the next significant part of her story. Do you feel on the threshold of something big and new? Take a leaf out of Ruth's book; refresh your attitude; renew your hope; anoint yourself for change.
Once Ruth is freshened up, our next shot sees her striding like a glamour puss in a slinky, sexy dress. Naomi had told her, 'put on your best garment' (Ruth 3:3). After all, if you want to see heads turn; you've got to be dressed for success.
Ditto; if you're going to turn heads to God, you've got to look the part. No lads, that doesn't mean cramming yourself into your sister's fake D&G; it simply means we need to get ourselves in good Christian shape. Once we're wearing love, joy and compassion, the director can cue lots of historic scenes.
