Courage Under Fire (3)
'Be strong and of good courage...' Joshua 1:6
So Joshua hears the words, 'I will give you every place where you set your foot ... No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you or forsake you. Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their fathers to give them' (Joshua 1:3-6 NIV).
The words fill his bones with iron and soon Joshua will lead the fight for the Promised Land. But all that happened a long time ago didn't it? Switch on the news now, and it seems every other week soldiers are fighting for a little strip of land, all of them pretending they've got a God-given right to it. Doesn't fighting just make orphans and widows?
Well Joshua's fight was a just fight. His people had been slaves, and now God wanted to restore them. It was a fight worth having.
In 1960s America there was another just fight. Dr Martin Luther King also believed in fighting for a promised land. A land where children were judged on the content of their character, rather than the colour of their skin. He called for people to fight by using peace as a weapon.
When struck, he would not strike back. An eye for an eye and the whole world goes blind, he believed. God honoured his courage. And God will honour yours.
