Be What You Believe
'...be... doers of the word, and not hearers only...' James 1:22
Don't think for a minute your Geography teacher could believe the world is flat and still teach what he teaches. Or that Amir Khan could throw a left jab without pounding a lot of punch-bags first.
Similarly, you can't really claim to be on first name terms with God if you never do what He says. Your teacher knows what he believes before he spouts his gob off. Amir Khan puts in the practice before he goes toe to toe with the world's best fighters. So should you.
Know what you believe. Get familiar with God and His Word before you spout it off to others. Then practice what it says before trying to take on the whole world in a fight. If your Bible says, 'Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come' (Luke 11: 2 NIV), then start practicing it.
Start praying like God is someone hallowed, holy or sacred rather than your own personal vending machine. Start living like 'your kingdom come' means something to you. Letting God have first dibs on your choices allows His kingdom to come (and not your will be done).
If you really believe Jesus meant, 'Give us each day our daily bread' (Luke 11:3) stop asking for the lifetime loaf. Winning the lottery won't make you happier; chances are it'll drive you further from God. So be thankful that God gives you what you need when you need it. The Bible: don't just read it - live it!
