Babe-in-Arms

There was something different about Simeon that day. It was that knowing smile he left the temple with. What did that smile know exactly? He'd hung around the temple longer than anyone could remember. He'd held and blessed more babies than a politician at election time. But he'd never been quite satisfied. He wasn't being rude - he just seemed to be looking for something or someone in the eyes of every child.
'All children have the promise of future in their eyes', he'd often said, 'but one day I will see the promise of God gazing from an infant's glare'. Most people dismissed him as nice but a little bit quirky in his beliefs. But could this be the smile of someone who had honestly stared face to face with God? Had his devotion finally paid off? All those early mornings and long days he'd spent in the temple looking for the face of God.
Could the teenage girl holding her newborn be holding the promise he'd received years and years ago? At long last, Simeon could go to his grave knowing he'd once nursed the Messiah in his very arms. God's salvation was on its way - and it was so close, he cradled it to his chest.
Today is about God making His Son known to the likes of Simeon, and to the likes of you. Salvation is here. And you can touch it. You can hold it. You can be face to face with God - if you want it.
