'[The] parts ... that seem ... least important are ... most necessary' 1 Corinthians 12:22
Paul massages his fingers into his temples. Maybe it's because he hasn't eaten or drunk water for days. He must be dehydrated. Or perhaps it's the lack of daylight in this damp, dank, dark jail. Or the lack of oxygen in the six by six foot cell.
Or the stress of not knowing whether tomorrow he lives or dies. Perhaps he feels homesick for his brothers in sisters around the world. The wild bunch in Corinth. The happy clappy brigade in Philippi. The bedrock foundation in Jerusalem.
Whatever the reason, Paul can feel another migraine coming on. He's at a real low. When he hears the footsteps on hard ground down the corridor, he hopes with all his heart it's Onesiphorus. The wild-eyed former slave has visited him most days this past year. Each day he comes with a smile and a hungry heart. His growing faith has been a much needed source of encouragement for Paul in prison.
Onesiphorus who? OK, so his name doesn't trip off the tongue quite as easily as Peter or Paul. He's barely mentioned more than twice in the entire Bible. And yet this unknown hero of the faith is a source of strength to an incarcerated Paul.
Don't bother asking why God makes some names known and others not-so-known. The point is everyone, whether named or unnamed, contributes to God's empire. So be encouraged - you may be anonymous but you're essential to the great plan.
