Shipwrecked
'Holding on to faith and a good conscience.' 1 TIMOTHY 1:19
In the Bible Paul writes to Timothy, warning him to keep his conscience grounded in God's Word. Loads of Tim's mates hadn't kept a tight hold of God and because of that Paul said they had become like sailing ships that had lost their way and been dashed on the rocks! What a depressing picture! The saying, 'Let conscience be your guide,' needs a bit adding to it: '...as long as your conscience is rooted in God.'
When we want to do our own thing and go our own way, we justify it by saying, 'If it feels so right it how can it be wrong?' Understand this: if God's Word says something is wrong, it's wrong; no matter how right it feels! There's no wriggle room! When you make all of your choices based on how you feel at that moment in time you could run the risk of the winds of temptation, compromise and comfort sweeping you off course and ending up shipwrecked.
The Apostle John gives us an all important reason for keeping our conscience in good repair: 'If we don't feel guilty, we can come to God with bold confidence. And we will receive from him whatever we ask because we obey him and do the things that please him' (1 John 3:21-22 NLT). That's better than the seaweed option any day!
