So be careful how you live. Don't live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don't act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. Ephesians 5:15-17

The pursuit of wisdom requires intentional decision-making. The choices you make impact personal wisdom. God’s Word says it’s better to follow the wise than lament your own poor choices. You’ve probably heard, “You’ll learn from your mistakes.” While that may be true, God places a great emphasis on obedience.

Because God wants you to have a good reputation He says, “Be careful how you live.” Because you’re to reflect God’s character He says, “Don’t act like fools.” Because He built you for positive relationships He says, “Make the most of every opportunity.” Because He wants you to love others He says, “Don’t act thoughtlessly.”

So, what is godly wisdom? Making an intentional choice to follow, knowing God will help you “understand what He wants you to do.” Wisdom isn’t available in any store, can’t be inherited, and is nontransferable. God can make you wise as you learn what He’s said and do what He’s asked.

You’ll make mistakes. Sin will inevitably be part of your life experience. Wisdom understands that God gave you a choice and the help you’d need to keep your distance from decisions that keep you at arm’s length from the One who loves you most (see 1 Corinthians 10:13).
