having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever, 1 Peter 1:23 NKJV

Today marks the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere. We’ll experience the shortest day and the longest night of the year. Because of its place in the yearly cycle, many cultures have celeb rated the solstice as a time of death and rebirth.

Winter may be a time when the world looks dead, but since the days will get longer and the nights shorter, hope isn’t lost. The natural world with its seasons and agricultural cycles might inspire some to believe that even the afterlife works cyclically, but Christians know better.

For you, rebirth isn’t part of a cycle. It’s a onetime event. By being exposed to the truth of God’s Word, by experiencing His love, you have been pulled out of the earthly cycle. Death doesn’t work the same once you’ve been born anew.

Being born again for a Christian doesn’t mean that the days will get longer and nights shorter from here on out. It means that day never turns to night. The plants don’t die at the end of the season, because winter is a thing of the past.

Prayer: Creator God, You made this world with beauty and order, and gave us seasons that hint at the possibility of rebirth. Thank You for Your sacrifice, which pulls me out of the cycle of death and into eternal life with you.
