Why was Lot's wife turned into a pillar of salt?

Genesis 19 tells the story of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot, Abraham’s nephew, lived in Sodom with his family. His daughters were engaged to local men. Lot was sitting at the gate of Sodom, the area where financial and judicial transactions took place, when two angels came into town. Lot invited them to stay with his family. After a rather exciting evening, the angels made sure Lot, his wife, and his two daughters left before God destroyed the city (Genesis 19:13). As they fled, the angels warned them, "Escape for your life! Do not look behind you, and do not stay anywhere in the valley; escape to the mountains, or you will be swept away" (Genesis 19:17).

Lot ran, his daughters close behind. “But his wife, from behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt” (Genesis 19:26). She lagged behind. She turned and watched the flaming sulfur fall from the sky, consuming everything she valued. Then it consumed her. The Hebrew for “looked back” means more than to glance over one’s shoulder. It means to regard, to consider, to pay attention to. The Scriptures don’t say whether her death was a punishment for valuing her old life so much that she hesitated in obeying, or if it was a simple consequence of her reluctance to leave her life quickly. Either she identified too much with the city—and joined it—or she neglected to fully obey God’s warning and she died.

We’re fortunate to receive similar warnings. Ephesians 4:22-24 tells us to take off the old self which is ruled by sin and be renewed, putting on the new self that is in the likeness of God. Similarly, 1 John 5:16 says that willful, deliberate sin can lead to death. Lot’s wife wasn’t able to accept that. What she chose to value in her heart led her to sin, which led to her death.

The Bible isn’t clear whether Lot’s wife was covered in the salt that rained down with the brimstone or if her remains were dusted with a coating of salt later. But it is interesting that she is described as a “pillar.” The Hebrew for pillar is natsiyb, which refers to a garrison or a deputy, something set to watch over something else. The image of Lot’s wife standing watch over the Dead Sea area—where to this day no life can exist—is a poignant reminder to us not to look back or turn back from the profession of faith we have made, but to follow Christ without hesitation and abide in His love.

The City was so evil . That the men of the city wanted to rape the angels . Lots wife love that life there, She did not want to leave. Lot had offered His virgin daughter to the Men of the city to leave the Angels alone. He knew God angels were holy and was willing to give His daughters life to protect them.
I guess He did not know the power of just one of GOD mighty angels ?

It really a very sad story . Other cities too were destroyed.

I can't always say why God does what he does. But he seems in the Bible certain people are called out.

Gen 38:7; But Er, Judah's firstborn, was evil in the sight of the LORD, so the LORD took his life.
Gen 38:8; Then Judah said to Onan, "Go in to your brother's wife, and perform your duty as a brother-in-law to her, and raise up offspring for your brother."
Gen 38:9; Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so when he went in to his brother's wife, he wasted his seed on the ground in order not to give offspring to his brother.
Gen 38:10; But what he did was displeasing in the sight of the LORD; so He took his life also.

These weren't the only two evil people in the Old Testament, so I wonder why God made a special case for them?
Of course we have Genesis 19, which specifically mentions Lot's wife.
There are of course many groups of people (Sodom and Gomorrah, the Pharaoh's army, etc...) that are destroyed by God, but in some cases, it seems specific people.

Some people say, well that was the God of the Old Testament, the God of the New Testament is love. I believe it's all the same God and he didn't change anything.
In Acts 5:1-10; we see the story of Ananias and Sapphira, who it seems God struck down dead. (these were members of the church)
In Acts 12, we see Herod struck down also.
Acts 12:23; And immediately an angel of the Lord struck him because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and died.

GOD could not have everything that ever took place written down . We would need trucks loads of books and who would read them and then it would be much more confusing?

He just gave us what we needed. The bible says? Just the Books that could be written about JESUS would be too much

Joh_21:25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.

Lots of stories and proverbs and more about Man kinds dealing with women. Many have messed up because of a woman.
That why we need to really think before hooking up with a woman. Man gets a good one? He will have a good life. Man gets a bad one? No telling what might happen?

The Old Testament was recorded for our benefit by way of example - Lot's wife loved the world and its way- the fruit of loving that corruption more than God was death. She was turned into a pillar of salt or literally a statue of salt (or powder).
We see this same heart expressed in the New Testament; the result is always the same:

Mat 13:22 He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.

Sadly some of thee folks attend church today. These folks walk and talk life believers, but like many in Jesus day they followed Him only for the loaves and the fishes (or perhaps chance at social and political gain) . They like what they hear, want the blessing, but have no real love for the Blessor- His response to them :

Mat 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
Mat 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Much like the world we live in today. As a ratio of people (10 in Sodom or ____ # in our society) would we fare any better?

I think we may be a little too hard on Lot's wife. Note Genesis 19:15,16.
The angels had given Lot the opportunity to encourage his children to leave the city. They didn't. Why? Because they had husbands who didn't serve the same God as Lot, and had so influenced their wives they chose to stay. Lot's wife had also fallen in love with the lifestyle and her heart was to remain in the city, despite her loyalty to her husband in attempting to leave. All this is Lots fault for taking them to the city in the first place. Should have remained on the farm.
Then we read in verse 16; 'and while he lingered....'....good grief! Even Lot hesitated to leave...the angels had to angelhand (as opposed to manhandle) him outa there! One wonders if Lot had been more positive in his attitude to leave, his wife may well have followed his lead?

There are many lessons here for husbands/fathers who dwell today in cities as we approach the day of the Lord. Remember, "as in the days of Lot...."

Perhaps that is why Jesus gave us this:

Mat 10:37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
Mat 10:38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.
Mat 10:39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

Luke 9:62; But Jesus said to him, "No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God."

I think God doesn't want people looking back wistfully at their former life (what might have been).

So true BAC...its like saying, "God. You have taken me this far...but thinking back I think I might have doen things a little differently, and better."

Personally my old life had no real joy or peace or love or anything good in it. Lots of mistakes and missteps
Sight thinking, flesh thinking.

Rather have Jesus Christ in my heart[Spirit] as Lord and everything put together in the old man life.
Rather be alone with nothing here than without HIM. He worth More than this world could ever give me. If we do not have Joy and Love and Peace within our own heart we have Nothing at All.

We see famous people with everything this life could give. Become drunks and drug addicts and some just killing themselves. Why? because they are poor and without anything ,God wants us to have. And Only HE can give.

So many are trying to please Him by giving to churches and pastors or religions and popes when All the time He only wants a Father and child relationship. They are tricked into thinking what they have is what He wants. When He does not care about what they have. He cares about Them alone. .
