Many Christians do not fully grasp why the Great Commission is so important. They wonder why the disciples gave up their lives for Christ, why the apostles travelled endlessly preaching the gospel, and why so many early Christians became missionaries despite persecution, imprisonment, and even death.
The answer is simple: The Great Commission is about rescuing people from eternal hell and reconciling them to God for eternal life, joy, peace, and everlasting fellowship with Him. We are giving a million dollar opportunity to help our neighbour be a better person and an eternal co-resident of heaven. A friend for all eternity.
Nothing is more important. It is more important than money, holidays, nice cars, chocolates or even our daily food.
Jesus commanded:
Matthew 28:19-20 “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you...”
Mark 16:15 “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”
Why?
Because mankind is separated from God by sin.
Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
And scripture warns of eternal judgment:
Matthew 25:46 “And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.”
Revelation 20:15 “And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”
This is why the gospel matters so much.
Through repentance and faith in Christ, people can be forgiven, transformed, and reconciled to God.
2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature...”
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Acts 2:38 “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins...”
Christians are not called to hide their faith or become spiritually passive. Jesus called believers to be salt and light in a fallen world.
Matthew 5:13-14 “Ye are the salt of the earth... Ye are the light of the world.”
God places His people throughout society for a reason:
Sometimes modern life distracts us. Careers, entertainment, money, comfort, and routine can slowly cause Christians to become complacent and forget eternity.
But the early church never forgot.
Romans 10:14 “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard?”
Paul even said:
1 Corinthians 9:16 “Woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!”
The Great Commission is not merely a church program. It is the mission Christ gave His followers.
Every day we should remember that the people around us have eternal souls. We should care whether they know Christ or not. We should pray for opportunities, wisdom, courage, and compassion to speak truth.
There is nothing more important than where a person will spend eternity.
