why is the devil said to have a long pointed tail, has two horns coming out from his forhead & that his whole body is red?

Good OL Society

That makes me laugh.LOL God is the most supreme. The most Loving. Society will do anything to distract us from the truth. Never mind that!!!!!!! Focus on the Lord my friend, God Bless You and stay strong in Jesus Christ.

We know from Scripture that the Devil, Satan, Lucifer was actually created quite beautifully, arguably the most beautiful of all angels.

Eze 28:13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone [was] thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.

Eze 28:14 Thou [art] the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee [so]: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.

Eze 28:15 Thou [wast] perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.

Eze 28:16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.

Eze 28:17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.

The iconic image you ask about is a far cry from what anybody would see if they actually encountered Satan himself. As to where this image came from, there are some varying ideas.

Some suspect that this image was barrowed from one of the Celtic gods known as Cernunnos. This is the mystical horned diety worshipped by them throughout Europe up to the end of the first century. His image is about the only thing known about him as depicted on stove carvings crowned with two stag antlers and in a meditative position. His name in Roman means "horned one" but his Celtic name remains unknown. This is very similar to the images of Baphomet common within the occult.

Others say that the image comes from the Greek god known as Pan. Pan was depicted as a half goat/half man or sometimes known as a satyr. Pan's main attributes include erotica, fertility, music (usually quite rustic), and dance.

The popular image we know of today comes from a long line of artistic depictions based on the above portraying the Devil as little more than a shrewd trickster, especially in performing arts, making the rather comical image you ask about seem like someone that is not so malevolent, which, in my humble opinion, is an artistic deception influenced by Satan himself. I would assume the devil is portrayed as red because that is associated with heat that comes from hell. We all know the Devil is not in hell......yet.

I have no idea where the pitchfork came from.

Hope this answers your question.

Demon/Devil form of an angel of light

I must respond to your post. What I've discovered is the word is where you find your answers and truths. The word of GOD says my people perish for lack of knowledge. If one doesn't study the word how will you know what to look for? If preachers and teachers don't preach or teach the gospel in Spirit and Truth our people don't have a chance against the wiles of the devil. A chance against the devils devices, the word says the god of this world meaning he uses the things, the people of the world to do false advertisment. Think about it if the world, the blind are looking from the outward appearance WOW what a way to decieve someone. Satan also known as Lucifer was on of the most beautiful angels there was outside appearance, but what about his heart? What about our heart? We can dress things up to what we think but if we don't got JESUS we don't got nothing. I always wondered why people think he's ugly in appearance when the word tells it all. We must be sober minded and seeking the things of GOD and asking to reveal ourselves to us you know the man/woman in the mirror when we can face our own funk we can stand against the deceit. Thank-GOD for the Holy Spirit keep digging for truth. Be blessed:love:My heart goes out to the lost and dying souls.I truly cry for the people commercial, ads work for the father of lies and don't even realize that each commercial of deceit doesnt glorify GOD it is giving credit to GOD's enemy and that is satan. I hope something that I have said touches you. Good night.

I don't know why but I also wonder the same question.
Maybe it just represent evil.
But why that particular costume? It would be interesting to know.

Your sister in Christ, Trish

ya know i dont think that any of us really know why. as far as the red goes though. there are verses in the bible that refer to sin in the color red or scarlet which is red.

I thank you all for your wonderful responses.

The reason why I posted this is because, my husband loves watching the movie Hell Boy & the movie Legend.

Both movies have the devil in them & both movies describe him as a monster red beast with horns & tail.

Now, it doesn't bother me how the movie made the devil look, but what really bothers me is the fact that people actually will watch these movies.

demonic forms

Our own Bible teaches that there are physical transformations that come alongside spiritual changes.

Abram became Abraham and was restored to a vitality and youth that fathered a nation. Sarai became Sarah and was restored to a fertility and beauty such that at over 80 years of age, she was lovely enough to be abducted by someone a little too taken by her looks.

Moses was so changed on the mountain that he had to wear a veil over his face for most people to look upon him. Joshua was "paused" in his aging so that he was as strong at 80 as he was at 20....

---

It then follows logically that aligning one's self very solidly with darkness might cause physical changes as well.

Further...if angels generally appear as men...how would demons look?

Most pagan religions worship at least one male-god image that is pretty close to the mythologized version of Satan. Scripture is silent as to why demons tend to display themselves as partly animalistic.

I can therefore only conjecture according to my own knowledge (neigh unto worthless but here goes) that it's most likely because they *want* to display themselves as partly animalistic -- so they can confuse things futher by making it seem like we should be worshipping animals. It makes a sort of sense. God's form is *human* - we *are* His image. I can see demons wanting to confuse and defile that image by mixing it with the lower forms of animals.

Also I suppose it's possible that this was a way to add elements of bestiality to the list of sins and defilements occuring at pagan gatherings -- since many of the fertility cults involved the "gods" fornicating with their human followers.

In any case, The early Catholic church caught wind of this popular form for the pagan "gods" and taught that they were actually demons and that this was at least one form that Satan and his minions could take. By contrast, the Eastern Orthodox church isn't so big on the whole horn/wings/tail bit. Satan gets described as a man, and as a dragon-beast, and that's it.

In any rate the Catholic merging of pagan gods with Satan travelled down the years and accross Protestant lines to modern day.

I had a children's bible when I was young that had a picture of Jesus and the devil arguing and the devil was red with a pointy tail. I even think he had a pitchfork. I was scared of that picture too.
Yes, it comes from men's imaginations. At least men who don't read the Bible.

"And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent...called the devil...and satan....and his angels with him" Rev 12 v 9

the great dragon
that old serpent
called the devil
and satan

No mistaking who we are talking about here.

"How art thou fallen from heaven O Lucifer son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground which didst weaken the nations.................................................Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit" Isaiah 14 v 12 - 15

Honestly I don't know, maybe he started that lie himself? The reality is the devil can appear in many forms but is not ugly. People who claim to see him say he has a very beautiful appearance, but I won't go by their words alone here.

2 Corinthians 11:14
14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

By spreading the idea that beautiful = good and ugly=bad, Satan can further cause division amongst humans. This is why society is shallow. We have more pity for the prettier kidnap victims and we are more patient with the beautiful lady. We assume that a pretty person is automatically good. So many people are now obsessed with looking beautiful.

I wouldn't typically speak of such blasphemous lies against Jesus, but the reason why this caricature exists is because Satan is a mocker. He has control over the culture of the world, and being a mocking rebel he wants to paint Jesus as the bad guy. Of course, we know Satan is the father of lies and when he lies he speaks from his very nature and that he has been lying since the beginning.

All that being said, this caricature is taken from a descriptions of Jesus. Jesus' robe has been dipped in His blood:

Revelation 19
Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God.

John the Baptist described Jesus as using a "winnowing" fork to separate the wheat (His children) from the chaff (those who oppose Him) when the time comes for Him to bring His recompense upon the world:

Matthew 3
“I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

And finally, a note on the "horns" idea. Scripture tells that the radiance of God is upon those who spend time very, very close to Father God. Moses had to wear a veil because the people couldn't even handle the radiance that shone off his countenance when he came down off the mountain.

Jesus, of course, radiated Father God always as He was the very embodiment of Father God in flesh.

This radiance, over the years, has been portrayed by oil painting artists down the centuries as a halo of sorts. I am sure you're all familiar with what I'm talking about. Well, down the ages, sculptors also tried to capture and express this radiance upon statues they made of Moses and so on. Well, when a sculptor has to show something, it's got to be in 3 dimensional expression. This "radiance" looks like horns in many depictions. Do a google search for "Moses" and "horns" and you will see what I mean.

So the lesson for today is to be very careful about how the world depicts anything about heaven, hell, Jesus, God, or anything. Why? The world lies because it is following Satan, the Father of Lies.

That caricature, though distorted through Satanic influences, has its roots in scripture.
Rev. 12:3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads......
.....9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Now this picture as we know is symbolic, and has been used by the enemy to distort and divert our attention away from the truth, for every detail of that symbol has poignant meaning, and is for our benefit to identify not just Satan, but also those agencies that throughout history he has worked through in the lives of men to deceive and lead away from truth.

Every lie and every evil thing is a trick of satan .

he does not want man kind to reject the pretty things of life as if all is bad. he uses nice looking things and people to deceive others.
Because man judges by sight. so if some thing looks nice ? then Man might not see true judgment and can be tricked then ?

That why he called the great deceiver . The whole world judges by sight. Our Lord judges by the spirit of man . as we should.

Then we will not be looking down on others and will be trying too lift others up who need help?
