Why Gates

I have always wondered but never took the time to study this out myself. Why does New Jerusalem have gates? I understand the twelve tribes but why gates? Who is going to be kept out or what purpose do they serve?

Revelation 21:12

Rev 21:25 In the daytime (for there will be no night there) its gates will never be closed;
Rev 21:26 and they will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it;
Rev 21:27 and nothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life.

The gates might not ever be closed, but they will be guarded, another thought is that the New Jerusalem may "float" above the earth, and the sinners below will not have access.

Hello SaviorNChrist.

Through most of human history gates and walls or fences were necessary
to keep out that which might threaten the community.

These gates were shut at night or during the day if a threat was encountered.

God is using these symbols for our sake, painting a picture so that we
understand that we are protected and safe in His presence.

Humans do not see or understand the spiritual, we are blind. Hence the elaborate imagery,
this is for your sake so that you are able to lock onto a reality in this spiritual realm.

When I was a lad all houses had fences and gates, the Bible is written for all generations.

This is shedding more light onto this subject for me. I do understand the imagery used through scripture so we'd be able to visualize/understand. Thanks both of you!!
