Why do you go to church?

We usually have morning devotion at my work place. So last week we where sharing the word of God and one of our work mate asked all of us (good question) why we go to church? What is our motive when we get up on Sunday mornings and dress up and prepare for church?

Most of the responses where almost the same
- I go to church because I get encouraged through the worship and the preaching
- I get revived when I go to church
- Church is a good place to fellowship with ……

Our time for devotion was up so I didn’t get a chance to speak.

So I just thought to bring this discussion here and ask you,
Why do you go to church?
What is your Motive?

A good and relevant question abigya. And one to which I hope many will give an answer.

I have attended church for a great many years, so I am allowing this question to challenge me today, why do I still go to church? I am looking into scripture and into my own heart for my answer.

Hebrews ch 10 v 25 "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves to gether, as the manner of some is, but exhorting one another: and so much the more as we see the day approaching".
The word 'assembling' = episunagoge

2 Thess ch 2 v 1 "and by our gathering together unto him" 'gathering together' = episunagoge......here is a gathering together unto him in the air.

Church meet together as a company of Gods people here on the earth, and soon church will meet together, in the air.

Acts 20 v 7 "And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread Paul preached unto them........."

1 Cor ch 16 v 2 "Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store as God hath prospered him............"

Collections would be taken (Sunday) the day all early Christians observed as their day of rest and worship. They were to lay up week by week a certain amount for the poor, and have the whole ready to send to Jerusalem when Paul came.

I go to Church....because I believe that the bible teaches that I should go, to meet with the Church, and give to Gods work as the Lord has blessed me.

I would like to add further to the O.P.

Adding to the reasons I have already given, why I go to church. Another motive would be that I go to church to bless the Lord, and to be blessed by Him.

I have returned to this topic because of what happened only last sunday. An invitation was given for any feeling in need to come forward for the prayerful laying on of hands. "The prayer of faith shall save the sick and the Lord shall raise them up"

A number went forward for prayer. I recall looking down at one lady, in her thirties perhaps. She was girating and twisting, kicking and waving her hands. I recall saying to myself, she is doing that herself. She was indeed. She stood to her feet to tell us that she had been freed from gripping, crippling athritus. A miricle indeed....I could go on..

A motive for my attendance with the Church, is to give thanks to the Lord, and to receive from Him. To receive any impartation...... from brothers and sisters also.

I used to go to "church" some years ago but I don't anymore.

I have no motivation in the least to go to a "church". However I do have fantastic fellowship with other believers frequently.

I do not support the fleshy style of ministry of what is typically called "pastor" or "church" with my money or time but I do give to the poor and help those in need when I can.

Now I know that in the minds of many religious folk I'm must be in a "backsliden" state, they are entitled to their opinion, but it is Jesus' opinion I care about and we're doing just fine.

Amen brother jiggyfly. I don't go to "church" anymore either. I am part of the Church that Jesus is building. For me it came down to a choice - I either believed what I was hearing from the pulpit, or I believed what Jesus was saying in His Word. I chose to believe Jesus.

I wouldn't do well to stop going to my church. In my case, my pastor is a God-send to my family. He preaches the Word of God, in a clear manner, and I believe the Holy Spirit speaks through him.

My Sunday School class is full of other married couples who have been through and are going through the same things my husband and I go through. This gives us fellowship and God's grace shows up all over the place when we pray and minister to each other.

I've been to some other churches where I'd leave, and wonder what I wasted 3 hours there for. You know the ones: the social club type church, or the "gathering of the shallow".

So I do understand where jiggyfly and Sunshine are coming from, too.

Hebrews ch 10 v 25 "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is, but exhorting one another: and so much the more as we see the day approaching".
The word 'assembling' = episunagoge

2 Thess ch 2 v 1 "and by our gathering together unto him" 'gathering together' = episunagoge......here is a gathering together unto him in the air.

There is an 'assembling' of the Church upon the earth today, and at a future date, there will be an 'assembling' of the Church in the air.

I go to church because it is my home away from home...
They people there are my family and I love them all.

The church also gives me support and encouragment that I need to succeed in my life. I want to give someone else the same support and love and encouragement so they can thrive in the Word.

Okay... why I've gone, stopped and go again.

As a child, I went because I was forced to. It was a Roman Catholic church and was baptized without knowledge of what it meant. I learned that there is a God and also learned about hypocrasy in the church and my home so quit at 13.

Did some searching through 'other' religions for awhile. Idolizing Gurus is no good as well as idolizing Pastors either.

In November 2000, I came to a true belief in all the New Testiment says of Jesus. He is our redemtion and Savior. I was correctly baptized. We joined a Christian church and I got involved. God even started a church from the Bible studies in our livingroom. I wasn't strong enough in the Lord to handle all the attacks from within my family and friends along with myself getting 'puffed up' and judging others.

I dropped out and God allowed my wife and I to mess ourselves up financially and even in our relationship towards eachother. I started drinking and smoking again and she lost respect for me because of it. I stopped awhile ago and I'm still paying the consequences of those problems. Though just recently we were invited to a church and have been attending for 5 weeks now.

For me, I feel it's good to gather together in worship and to learn more of God's Truth continuosly. To have good christian friends to pray with and to find out God's plan for each of our lives. Going to Church strengthens our faith in the saving Grace of Jesus. It does for me anyways.

I agree with Hebrews 10:25 and I do assemble or gather with other believers. We just don't do it in a building with stain glass windows, a pulpit and pews. We do not follow the man-made traditions of liturgy and worship. I find that many of the gatherings are carnal and have more to do with earthly things and are comprised of old covenant practices like tithing and gathering at an altar.
So I do believe in gathering together, but I don't do it in the traditonal (man-made) way.

You're right jiggyfly. Many, maybe all churches are carnal.
I'm going to start another thread on "The Great Commission"
How to support or be involved in missionary work.

I have no quarrel with anything you are saying here dear Brother. I understand you perfectly.

This is a wonderful post. I believe that you are actually 'upsliding' as against backsliding. You seek a deeper walk with Him hence your 'fantastic fellowship with believers often' I only wish that you will make it always. I happen to share your believes about the state of the 'church' There is a true church that no one can defile of which we are all a part- the body of Christ.

I love the church I attend. Although I do not go anymore due to one fact (severe hearing problem, makes sermons impossible for me) the church is extremely humble and Scripture based. It is completely about Jesus and yet it is rather not a small gathering. Usually worship crowd is about 700 people or so, its nice. You can always feel the Holy Spirit there (maybe not each individual all the time, but you can sense Him with us).

I do pray and ask all to be careful of how you word your feelings toward "church". I respect everyone's thoughts, opinions and experience without a problem but its critical to remember that other people (guests) are reading this thread and other threads. They may get the impression that church in general is no good. This is entirely not true. Some are not on par with GOD, others are on par with GOD. My church local is non-denominational. I love these kinds. I do not agree with "catholic" church system. I have 13yrs of catholic school experience to back this up :)

We all have our personal experience but its important to remember that "church" is the Body of Christ and the gathering place is the church building. Its a blessing from GOD. Don't let one bad apple spoil the whole bunch.

Hello ABIGYA,

It is nice Question you have put it, This Quest asking me Y I am going to church?.

I am going to church because chruch is place where I feel Comfortable, I share all my though, Dremes, and I thing chruch is second place where I meet Jesus and talk to here. Chruch is a place I am waiting for 6 day.

Matthew 18:20
For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”

I do not doubt that the Lords presence is upon all our churches,
I really do love my church, gets exited every time I have to go to my church and every time I go their I do get blessings one way or the other.

My point was people have to go to church with an expectation to really meet the lord.
Because we some times make it tradition to go to church on Sundays and it goes and on and on………..

Even in my work place I sow my work mates to really question them selves, why am I going to church?

So I suggest to really check our heart and ask our selves, do I have an expectation to have an encounter with God, goal or purpose.

What God spoke to me after I was asked this question-
May be some times we have to go to church with a heart of “to bless some one you meet in your church”.

Lord make us a blessing to some one today.
In Jesus name

Thank you for your sincere and humble correction. I think the area of difference is in the definition of Church. If the body of Christ is the church, then it is impossible for her to be corrupted. This body of Christ is the true Church. Some gatherings belong to this body and others do not, as apostles Paul warns that some will come whose god is their bellies. Also, let the wheat and the tares grow together.... Hence, my quotation mark for the church in my previous reply. My reply was an encouragement to someone who is seeking a deeper walk with the Lord God. We may not all seek our God in large gatherings. Some will prefer to seek Him in twos and threes.

The whole of Leviticus 23 is a good text for how the Lord seeks to be worshipped. Our understanding of the chapter should not in the letter or the figure but in the spirit. It traces worship from Salvation to Sanctification, to the Pentecostal out-pouring and beyond. Salvation is just the beginning, Pentecost is not our destination. He will come for a church without spot or wrinkle or any such thing. The Lord's cloud is moving, may we move with Him. May the Lord grant us understanding as we read. Amen.

Well, I love church the only place in a sinless of my week i am much out of the worldly most of the sunday.. I go to church to learn to and worship and praise God. I also go to church because there drama at home that I really want to get out of that problems and I also go to Church to see if there any prophetic words for my life. Or want to go to a fun special event. Also I like filling up in the holy spirit and the preaching is always bless me for the word that I need because my pastor, co pastor or my minister break it down of the understanding also there times that I need prayers and they would pray for me also love seeing my brothers and sister in church in a small church with a big heart and we also have a baber shop next to the church and I go there to talk to people or see the barber or get my hiar cut and love going to bible study because it help me to grow in Gods word.... And everybody is young like my self and i love seeing my pastor because he like my dad which he is and it is fun going to church because I rather not going to a dance club or bar but rather have fun in the lord and loving and paising for the things that he has done... He is worthy to be PRAISE. Also can't forget I don't get much love like the Church that why I hate when there are evil ppl in the world
